A collection is a group of products with its own page on your store, for example /collections/best-sellers. Use collections in your menu, on your home page and in discounts. Go to Online Store → Content → Collections to see them. Click Add collection to make one.

Manual or automated

Every collection has a Collection type:
  • Manual — you choose the products one by one. Add or remove them in the collection’s Products card, or tick the collection on a product’s page.
  • Automated — you set conditions, and every product that meets them is in the collection. New products that match are added, and products that stop matching are taken out, without you doing anything.

Set up an automated collection

1

Choose Automated

Open the collection and pick Automated in the Collection type card.
2

Add conditions

Each condition checks one thing about a product:For price, compare-at price and stock, a product matches when any of its variants does. Text is compared without caring about upper or lower case.
3

All or any

Under Products must match, choose all conditions (a product must meet every one) or any condition (one is enough).
4

Save

The collection fills straight away and your store updates.
Examples:
  • Sale — Tag is sale.
  • Under $25 — Price is less than 25.
  • Christmas decorations — Product title contains ornament, any condition, Tag is christmas.

Good to know

  • You can’t add or remove products by hand in an automated collection. Its products come from its conditions. To change what’s in it, change the conditions. To pick products yourself, switch it back to Manual — it keeps the products it has, and from then on you choose.
  • Product changes show up by themselves. When you edit a product’s title, tags, price, stock or type, every automated collection it now matches (or no longer matches) updates within seconds.
  • Up to 60 conditions per collection.
  • Products that are drafts or archived can still match, but shoppers only see live products.

For developers

  • GET /api/v1/collections returns automated: true for a collection filled by conditions.
  • GET / PUT /api/v1/collections/{id}/rules read and save { "rules": [{ "field", "op", "value" }], "match_any" }. An empty rules list makes the collection manual.
  • Adding, setting or removing products on an automated collection (POST / PUT /api/v1/collections/{id}/products, DELETE /api/v1/collections/{id}/products/{product_id}, and the Agent Gateway’s PUT /collections/{id}/products) is refused with 409 and a sentence explaining why.
